Start Your Journey

At CHI Memorial Metabolic and Bariatric Care it is our aim to have the best-educated and most knowledgeable group of patients where this type of surgery is concerned.

Our extensive experience has shown that when patients are informed, empowered, and in control of their journey, they are most likely to find success.

The day of your surgery or procedure is just a single day in the weight loss journey you will go through. We will of course be there for your surgery, but beyond that we will be with you through each step of this process. Our aftercare program is designed to ensure the tool you're given - surgery or the weight loss balloon - has the best chance of helping you find the weight loss and health you seek.

Initial visit
During the initial evaluation we will concentrate on making sure that you know as much as possible about our laparoscopic procedures. We will show you a teaching video-tape, give you an informative brochure and discuss all the details.

Consultation with a surgeon
If you are interested in the procedure you will meet with one of our Bariatric Surgeons who will answer any questions you may have about the procedure. The surgeon will help you understand which options are best for you, as well as the benefits and risks of each procedure, so you can make a truly informed decision about your health. If there are no contraindications, and you would like to continue in the process, you will proceed to the next steps.

Medical evaluations

Before surgery, you will undergo a medical evaluation, including lab tests, X-rays of your stomach (UGI series), an EKG, a nutritional evaluation, and psychological evaluation. Most of these are required by insurance companies. We are committed to having the most well-prepared patients for surgery, and these steps before your procedure day will help give you the best chance of succeeding.

Schedule your procedure
At this point we will work with you to schedule your procedure. If you live out-of town and have made contact with our Clinical Coordinator, we can arrange a full evaluation and screening with limited travel, and in most cases you should be able to drive or fly back in a couple of days after surgery. (This option may not available for those wishing to file for insurance coverage of the procedure.)
